Pillar Legalized at Dupont and Symington But Pattison has Another Problem Down the Street
We admit to be disappointed at what happened just yesterday at Dupont and Symington.
In Another Pattison Sign Built on the Sidewalk we told you about this Pattison pillar that was built on the road allowance:

We had hoped in complaining about the sign that Pattison would abandon the property as moving the sign to the permitted location would take up a parking space. Unfortunately, the sign was moved off the sidewalk yesterday but just shifted over to the permitted spot:
(While investigating our complaint, Right of Way management noticed that the red newspaper box didn’t have a permit.) There is still hope for the removal of this pillar, depending on what happens when this lot gets developed. We should note that the Astral Media 10′x20′ that used to be on this lot was removed when the buildings were demolished. Here is the old 10′x20′:

It has been entirely removed:
Meanwhile, in the same neighborhood, Pattison is still operating the illegal roof sign at 1292 Dupont we told you about in: The 1292 Dupont Street Roof Sign: Can Sid Catalano Tell the Truth?; and we have just discovered another illegal Pattison in the ‘hood:
What you see there is a 10′x20′ Pattison ground sign along Dupont, west of Campbell, near a 10′x40′ Pattison roof sign at Dupont and Campbell Avenue, east of Campbell. The roof sign is legit, the ground sign isn’t. The ground sign was permitted at a time when third party signs were not allowed to be located within 60 Metres of each other, but third party signs that “face different streets” were permitted to be within 60 Metres of each other. This was interpreted to mean that third party signs at the intersection of two streets with sign faces that are perpendicular to each other face different streets. The ground sign in the photo above is required to have a sign face that is perpendicular to the 10′x40′ roof sign so that the 10′x20′ “faces Dupont Street” and the 10′x40′ “faces Campbell Street.” The sign face is not perpendicular as required by permit, it is built parallel to increase visibility. These signs are within 35 metres of each other.
Can the Pattison 10′x20′ sign be moved 25 metres to the west so it can have an ad-face parallel to the 10′x40′? No, because there is an Astral Media sign on railway property 118 metres to the west of the 10′x40′ roof sign. This means that Pattison missed out on a legal sign by 2 metres. In addition, Astral cannot move their ground sign by two metres to accommodate Pattison due to another Pattison roof sign nearby which makes the Astral sign non-conforming.

I have complained about pillar and that corner before. It is next to impossible to see traffic coming east on Dupont due to the shelter, pillar and other boxes on that corner. The movement of the pillar actually just makes it worse. And why does there have to be a mailbox and paperbox right on the corner blocking visibility ?
We were definitely banking on the removal of the pillar and are quite disappointed too. Unfortunately, it is now in a legal location. We’ll have to see what happens when this lot is developed. -Rami

Scott: You have two possible recourses:
a) Contact the City’s Transportation Services division by calling their customer service line at 416-338-9999. Or get in direct contact with Kyp Perikleous, who’s in charge of “street furniture” (416-392-1799 or kperikle {at} toronto(.)ca) or Angie Antoniou, who’s the manager of right-of-way management for the former Toronto (416-392-1525 or aantonio {at} toronto(.)ca).
b) Get in touch with The Fixer.

Thanks for A.
No thanks for B. The so-called Fixer is no friend of our area. I will leave it at that.
