Street Study: Peter Street

Today we look at Peter Street, a small downtown street that runs from Queen to Wellington.

At 375 Queen Street West, facing south and targeting northbound Peter Street traffic and also visible from Richmond, is an Astral Media fascia sign on a 1997 Mediacom mural permit:

If there is a window behind there, please let us know. We think Astral lost this lease as this location is currently being shopped around to vendors.

Just south of there is an ad-free parking lot, and south of that and facing Astral’s sign is Titan’s illegal fascia sign on a mural permit at 134 Peter:

On the roof of that building, you can see a single-faced 10′x20′ CBS roof sign. That roof sign was granted a permit in 1986 before roof signs were restricted in any way. Why is this sign single sided? Because Richmond West is a one way street westbound. The Astral and Titan signs are illegal on account of that CBS roof sign which is within 60M separation requirements. They are also illegal on account of size.

134 Peter was a Cieslok location that became a Murad that became a Mediacom at one point that is now back in Cieslok’s hands at Titan. Here’s the ironic thing about 137 Peter. In December 1994, Cieslok actually obtained a 44 square metre vinyl fascia permit (94-368653) for this location but then, when Murad acquired the site, Murad obtained a mural permit (96-389863) because murals were still more economical than fascias in 1994. When Cieslok obtained the original fascia permit for 134 Peter, there were no separation requirements from the roof sign. After Murad obtained the mural permit, separation requirements were instituted, so the original vinyl fascia sign at this site could not be re-constituted. Hence, Cieslok’s vinyl fascia sign is illegal although he obtained a permit for the exact sign you see today in 1994.

At 128 Peter Street, Strategic Media is operating this sign without a permit:

The roof signs look pretty legit.

At 118 Peter Street, the Megaposter fascia sign was removed. We wrote about that sign in Vikor Goes Down on Peter, Up on Queen. At 114 Peter, StreetLife Media is operating the kiosk signs without a permit:

You see the old Megaposter fascia above the kiosk.

At 117 Peter, the illegal Megaposter sign is still being operated:

At 102 Peter, Pattison is operating this fascia sign without a permit:

On the southerly elevation of that building, Titan is operating a sign that has a fascia permit and looks legit except it is blocking a vent. We are researching its legality of that, as well as the encroachment of that sign.

At 87 Peter, Street Life again:

Above that kiosk is a legal Titan sign at 81 Peter that has a fascia permit issued in 1995 for 44 square metres. 81 Peter used to be Cieslok’s headquarters and the Buildings Department still sends mail there from Cieslok’s un-inspected permits.

Oh and the Street Life kiosk across the street at 92 Peter was destroyed by the building boom as was the illegal Pattison fascia above it.

That’s it for Peter Street, except for another Strategic Media sign we’ll tell you about later.
