Building Boom: Astral’s Illegal Former Ground Sign at 326 King Street West
In today’s edition of Building Boom we take a look at Astral’s illegally upgraded ground sign in the former parking lot at 326 King Street West – the northwest corner of King and John, just up the street from Metro Hall.
This is what Astral’s illegal sign looked like in November, 2006:

And this is what it looks like today:

The sign was removed to make way for the Festival Centre, a condo development combined with a film festival centre.
The sign was illegally upgraded in that it was operating under this permit, which allowed a 10′ by 20′ sign:
And in fact the sign was 15′ x 25′, according to Astral’s documentation:
Looking closely at the sign you can see that the catwalk was designed for a smaller, 20 foot across sign. This kind of upgrading is pretty typical of Astral’s ground sign portfolio, especially in the high circulation areas.
There was also at least one additional Astral ground sign on this lot that was removed to make way for construction.
